Ekiti speaks: ‘Fayemi told us Obama will come to Ekiti’

Day after coverage of the June 21st Ekiti State governorship election which favoured the former Governor, Ayo Fayose,  Olugbenga Adanikin went to the streets of Ado-Ekiti to sample peoples’ opinion why the incumbent Governor lose out in the election. Excerpts:

EKITI SPEAKS

Niyi Olaiya
Hotelier

We thank God that the election was done freely without violence. The Ekiti people voted for Ayo Fayose as the next Governor as they voted against Fayemi as result of his behavior to the people of Ekiti State. The reason is that when Fayemi got to the mantle, he neglected everybody in Ekiti. He believed that only people from Lagos State are those that can work with him. They don’t patronize local contractors except from Lagos. Most members of his cabinet were brought from Lagos so he was not relating with the people so they voted him out.

He did it before so the trust still remains. The people believe he can still make them happy because the hardship during the term of Fayemi is too much. So this is why the people called on him that he should come and be their saviour. I think this is among what prompted them to vote for him to be the next governor.

Lazarus Ode

Motorcycle Rider

Fayose won just because of the love they have for him and his antecedent of past work he did when he was a governor. Based on a man that has federal presence, i think Ekiti will develop through this emergence.

Robinson

Trader

What i observed is that the man (Fayose) did not concentrate on the high class but always on defence of the masses. He took everyone along during his first time as a governor and especially, i understand that he was the first to construct double lane road in Ekiti state. Moreover, he built market for the handset sellers. We hope that he will run inclusive governance just like he did before.

Opeyemi

Student

The man is lucky and also has the love of God. He is loved by virtually everybody so they voted for him. I never knew he would win the election but i believe it’s divine. So i hope he will reduce the school fees by the time he is sworn in to office. We have not been collecting our bursary since the last four years.

Dayo Dada

Fashion Designer

Fayose is a man of his word and very free with people irrespective of the class. If you need help, he will attend to you. Ekiti people like him so much. So as an apprentice, he should help us; connect us with people that matter so that we can have good customers.

Funmilayo Oyegoke

Market woman

Ayo Fayose is a man of the people. He threats the trader well and the people like him. He is a man of the poor. I am not saying Fayemi did not try but everything is bound with time and reason. So, now that it's the turn of Fayose, i pray it favour ours and our society. I want him to provide jobs because i gave birth to four children and they are done with their NYSC since three years ago without job.

Hassan Abdulahi

Commercial Motorcyclist

In the history of this state, we have gotten an election that is this free and fair. I have never experienced such so I commend the INEC for a great work, the police Inspector General and other security operatives for the maximum security they provided to protecting our people. We thank God that the person God wanted as emerged. From my experience, it’s not Fayose that people voted for but people like the PDP as a party.

Ismaila Sodiq

Commercial Driver

Fayose is a friend of the masses and he is welcoming. In fact, we were not satisfied when he was chased out of office then. He is good and loyal to the people. If you walk by the streets, you will hear of little kids of three to four years old chanting Fayose's name. He relates with them and does not underestimate anyone. Fayemi also tried but people in his cabinet are not too good. But if Fayose award a contract, he will go out personally to monitor the job. So, that is the kind of person we want.

Fawole Morakinyo

Member of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)

The entire people are excited when Fayose won. The reason is that when Fayemi got there, it did not fulfill all his promises. In Ado-Ekiti and other local governments, he only did little. Then, when he came and won the election everyone was happy that the messiah has come and he will turn Ekiti to a small London. But it was all lie. He told us President Obama will come and establish industries in our state and that he was an American. He spoke so good that we tagged him phonetic governor (gomina oloyibo). It was that he used to deceive us but Fayose has governed us before, we know his behaviour that he is a friend of the masses. If Fayose is moving in the convoy and something happened in town, he will wait and settle it, he is not proud. He settles our union crises amicably.

Shola Ogundana

Bussinessman

Governor Fayose is the man of the people. He did it once and during that time, every Ekiti people enjoyed him. He satisfied virtually everyone. He did much work in terms of road, infrastructure among others. It is just unfortunate for Fayemi, but i want him to cooperate with him because this election is free and fair. There was no violence. Fayemi tried his best really.

Engr. Jaiye Oba

Engineer

What i observed is that it is good to be of good conduct because of the unknown. The deed you did today may not be appreciated today but in the future. Ekiti had opportunity of comparing two governors but now they know the different. The new governor did it before and does not underestimate anybody. Apart from that, he responds to queries promptly compared to others.

Adeniyi Tope

Farmer

It was a surprise to everyone. There was no violence of any sort; it was free and fair so INEC should be commended.

Hon. Akiniyi Kehinde

Teacher

It was a great occurrence. The election was transparent such that it can withstand any court judgment. As you can see everyone is excited meaning he is most preferred as the governor. It is expected that all challenges the face has been facing would be addressed like the education system. It was during Fayemi’s administration, our education index dropped to number 33 in the rating in the country. When Fayose was there, he brought us from number 35 to 7. So, if Fayose had been allowed to continue, we may be leading in the nation's education standard.

Sefunmi Olajide

Student

Fayose is a nice person and loved by people. During his first term, he did well and people enjoyed his governance. We believe that he will do more than that now that people has voted him in. Fayemi did not impress the people. Our school fees increased massively when he came in. The part time students in Ekiti State University EKSU are paying more than N100, 000 as school fees which ought not to be.

Mrs. Kikelomo Asenipekun

Banker

People voted against Fayemi because they love Fayose and they know he will perform. Everyone knows he is a man of the people. He knows our worth and everything we want and he is the one that can deliver. We trust him. We know he is the one that can satisfy the masses. These people are tired of Fayemi. They believe he is being manipulated by his God -father, so they did not allow him to perform. He is not conscious of the masses, so everybody has rejected him. But believe me, if Fayose did not perform in the first time, Ekiti people won't have voted for him. I believe it is his previous work that spoke for him.

Omosebi Remi

Trader

This is the kind of person we want in Ekiti. There won't be poverty again, enough of the long suffering. Fayemi also tried by constructing roads but he started the construction from where Segun Oni stopped.

David Alabi

Educationist

Ayo Fayose is a popular person and a one-time governor. He did a lot of things for the people when he was a governor. That was the advantage he has that people turned up to vote. People liked him so much. Also, he was able to gain the mind of the people during the campaign that was why people came out to cast their vote in his support. Also, the way Fayemi run the government was very bad. He promised school fees of N50, 000 and it was rising up to N150, 000. That is one of the disadvantages. At the same time, he got a lot of loans for no reason.

I expect that he would reduce the school fees to about N50, 000. At the same time, he should create job through agriculture in order to reduce hunger in the society.
